Why is it That When It Comes to Essay Topics About Social Issues, We Are Usually Tied to Gender Or Race Issues

Why is it That When It Comes to Essay Topics About Social Issues, We Are Usually Tied to Gender Or Race Issues? Why is it that every time I go to a essay writing workshop, my essay topics for college or high school essays are always centered on social issues, while most of the adult courses I take center on civic issues? It doesn't make sense to me.Why is it that when it comes to essays about social issues, we are focused on gender or race issues and we rarely get a chance to talk about class? Why is it that as soon as it comes to talking about social issues, social justice has to be mentioned first? Why are our students not learning the content that is really important for writing successful college essays, even if we tell them all the time that they should?Have you ever noticed that we say things like 'homophobia'racism'classism'gender' when discussing these topics? Why is it that in all the time that we spend talking about these topics, our students do not learn how to do these thi ngs? Why are we spending so much time on these issues but only a little time actually talking about them? Why do we pay so much attention to the differences between genders and races but just as little attention to class? In fact, why does it seem that the discussion of these issues has all but vanished? We have really 'lost the plot' with these things. I can't understand how we can talk about these issues if the majority of the population doesn't even know what they are, let alone how to do anything about them?It just doesn't make sense to me, but why does it make sense to most of the people that teach high school and college? Is it because they don't want to talk about social issues? These are the two most common reasons that most teachers give when asked why they don't use essay topics about social issues in their classroom discussions. And if it's not the topics, why is it that they have such a hard time figuring out what to say about them? What is happening to our country that we are not teaching our students about these social issues? Why is it that when we talk about gender, race, class, or any other concept, it has to be 'politically correct?' If we spent a little time explaining these concepts, what better way to teach them to our students than to explain what these concepts are and why they are important? That is what we should be doing in our classrooms and our colleges and in our social studies and public policy issues. Instead, we are spending all this time and energy trying to tell students to 'feel'think' about these topics, which is basically just equivocation at best.
